Gurram Jashuva - presented by Roy Lazar
Psalm from India (September 2008)

Gurram Jashuva

Gurram Jashuva was a very popular Telugu poet, born 1895 into a poor Christian family in Vinukonda, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. It was the time when Gandhi was thrown off a South African train for being an Indian and traveling in a first class compartment.
It was the time of segregation in the United States and of the caste system enforced by the British colonial power in India. Because of his social affiliation to the "untouchables", Gurram Jashuva would perceive himself as a "Dalit" today. He
was discriminated as an untouchable in school, college and professionallife. Protests against untouchability and segregation have been common themes in all his literary works. Jashuva died on July 24th, 1971.

His Psalm was presented by Dr. Roy Lazar, Institute for Christian Studies, Madras University, and prize recipient of the MWI prize for contextual theology.

Translation of the Psalm:
