African Slaves in Ecuador
Song based on the oral tradition of slaves - Psalm from Ecuador (March 2007)

Song based on the oral  tradition of slaves

In the 16th/17th century African black slaves were brought to the Andean region of Ecuador. It is only within the last 40 years that their descendants are allowed to live and work as free peasant owners on small landed property. Until this very day they address songs of protest and zest for life, like their ancestors, to God. Dances and accompanying drums play an important role in the singing these  Psalms.
