Benjamin González Buelta
Psalm from Cuba (December 2007)

Benjamin González Buelta S.J.

Benjamin González Buelta S.J. born 1942 in Léon, Spain, entered the Noviciate of the Jesuits at Salamanca in 1958. Some months later he was sent to Cuba to continue his Novicate there. The period 1960-1965 saw him pursue studies in Venezuela, Spain and Belgium. Thereafter, from 1965 to 2002, he worked in the Dominican Republic. His ministry in the slums of Santo Domingo and his apostolate as Novice Master in Santiago de Caballeros brought him into close contact with the ordinary people, and he devotedly served the poor. After his service as Provincial of the Antilles, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus appointed him Superior of the independent region of Cuba (2002). The character of his spirituality focuses on the everyday life of the people in discovering therein the traces of God's existence and of His endless creative power. His "mysticism of the open eyes" is shown in his many publications - some of them being Psalms, "Inadvertent Prayers".
