In the eighties (1981-1990) the work of the MWI developed itself for the purpose of the building up of an intercontinental network of theologians. Increasingly the Institute took over the task and function of a platform and a catalyst for the academic exchange amongst the Local Churches in the South. Simultaneously in 1981 the German language book series Third World Theology was initiated with the aim of giving interested persons in Europe access to selected theological contributions from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania.
